Since 1990, the Easter long weekend has been the location of the Byron Bay Bluesfest, formerly known as the East Coast International Blues & Roots Music event, an annual Australian music event. One of the top events for modern music, the festival showcases a wide variety of blues and roots artists from Australia and throughout the globe.

Dan Doeppel and Kevin Oxford started the festival in 1990, and it is now administered by Peter Noble, who joined Oxford for the 1994 edition. It has been hosted in a number of places in and around Byron Bay, and is now taking place in Tyagarah, which is about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) north of the town. It used to run for four days, but as of [when?] it now runs from Thursday through Monday for five days. An occasion within the festival devoted to Indigenous Australian performance, art, and culture is called the Boomerang Festival.

The Byron Bay Film Festival, a well-known independent awards-based film festival recognized by the AACTA Awards, takes place in the last months of the Australian summer at the Byron Community & Cultural Centre in the seaside community of Byron Bay.

Byron Community & Cultural Centre Venue Manager Greg Aitken, together with local Byron Bay filmmakers David Warth, John Abegg, Vera Wasowski, and current Co-Director Osvaldo Alfaro, founded the festival in 2005. Although the festival’s name was changed to the Byron Bay International Film Festival in late 2008, it kept the old abbreviation, “BBFF.”
